Citizen of the Year 2010

Margaret Burrows MBE

Margaret is the Honorary Secretary of The Barrow and District Disability Association and has given many years of service to the group. Margaret is the recipient of an MBE for her services to the community and takes part in a number of formal and informal groups and committees for the benefit of the town.

 

 

Young Citizen of the Year 2010

Jemma Bell

Jemma worked over 200 hours volunteering in support of young people taking part in sporting activity working with a range of projects.  She also became Ambassador for promoting volunteering with young people.

 

Group or Project of the Year 2010

Barrow Parish Nurse Project

Run by volunteers and contributing to the health and well being of local people through a range of initiatives, the Barrow Parish Nurse Project became a recognised and valued service by health professionals throughout the area.

 

Carer of the Year 2010

Pat Spicer

Pat is an inspirational character who has overcome her own illness following an accident and continued working as a carer in a nursing home for the elderly.

Whilst doing this she was also the full time carer for her partner following his illness.

 

 

 

Teacher of the Year 2010

Helen Wigan and Karen Griffiths

In 2010 the Teacher of the Year award was presented jointly to two people.

Helen is a martial arts teacher who also teaches young people about life skills and the value of respect, good behaviour and caring about the community.  Helen’s dedication and willingness to put in extra time were noted as reasons for the award.

Karen, a head of PE at St Bernards School, was short listed in the Sunday Times PE Teacher of the Year 2008 and throughout her 16 years of teaching had showed dedication and commitment bringing out the best in many young people.

Courage Award 2010

Jo-ann Ellis

Jo-ann showed great courage and strength throughout her son’s long battle with cancer.  Following the loss of her son Jake, Jo-ann raised around £40,000 for cancer charities.

 

 

 

 

Sports Volunteer of the Year

Chris Reid

Chris won the award for years of voluntary work in support of Furness Rugby Union Club.

Working as a groundsman, coach and latterly as a club chairman he has been a key figure in helping the club progress and develop following years of uncertainty about its future.

Ambassador Award 2010

Inspector Geoff Steele

Serving as a Police Officer  for 28 years and then as a Police Inspector for 11 years, Geoff is well known for his work within the partnership sphere, on behalf of the police, for many years and is described as a creative thinker, whose ideas are translated across Cumbria and beyond, taking a positive message about Barrow and it’s successes with them.

Geoff has always been at the forefront of innovative and creative thinking and is also responsible for many excellent developments in community work, community safety and partnership work locally.  As a passionate advocate for young people, he has always strived to develop a good quality of opportunities for them and devoted much of his time to developing better responses and initiatives around work with young people, both in and out of the criminal justice system.

He is also responsible for establishing an apprenticeship scheme with in the police for local young people to complete NVQ’s in Business Administration while learning about local policing, partnerships and community life, which is just one of the many examples of his commitment to young people and his willingness to think ‘outside the box’ to create quality opportunities.

Geoff was also the lead officer for the local Safer Schools Partnership and introduced the use of Restorative Justice which aimed to reduce the number of young people entering the criminal  justice system.
