Citizen of the Year 2009

Bernard McNamee

Bernard has given over 32 years of dedicated service to Duddon Inshore Rescue service as founding Chair and trustee and latterly President of the service.  He has been involved in over 500 incidents in its 39-year history and he retired as president at the start of 2009.

Bernard was and continues to be, very much appreciated by the Askam community who nominated him for the award.

Young Citizen of the Year 2009

Kieron Christian

Kieron won the Young Citizen Award for volunteering at both the Drop Zone Youth Project and Signal Films.

Despite personal challenges, Kieron became a valued member of the team and showed commitment above and beyond what was expected of any volunteer.

Group or Project of the Year 2009

Marsh Street Arches and Gardens CIC

The not-for-profit company, Marsh Street Arches and Gardens CIC was responsible for developing a piece of derelict land, which was also regularly the site of anti-social behaviour, into the Green Heart Den Community Garden.

The garden has since become a focal point local schools, colleges and community members to enjoy, learn and relax.

Carer of the Year 2009

Sam Stitt

Sam was awarded the Carer of the Year award for the dedicated care of his Mum and sisters.

Due to his Mum’s illness, Sam had to help with her medication and general care as well as looking after younger sisters.

Teacher of the Year 2009

Colin Smith

Colin is the former headteacher of Greengate Junior School.

After serving 25 years at the school, Colin is well known throughout the local community for his emphasis on making links between the school and community.

Courage Award 2009

PC Oliver Hamiliton

PC Hamiltion is the Community Officer for the Ormsgill Estate.

He is well respected by many in the local community for his dedicated work in the area and is always willing to go the extra mile.

He arrested two drug dealers from Mersyside who were ‘working’ on the estate.
